Your Questions Answered
Welcome to our FAQ section. Here, we've compiled answers to some of the most common questions about our swimwear and sun protection. If you have any other question, we're here to help via our contact form!
1. What is UPF50+ and how is it different from SPF?
SPF measures how well a sunscreen protects skin against UVB rays only. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation — both UVA and UVB — a fabric blocks. A UPF50+ rated fabric blocks ≥98% of all UV radiation. MIKOU swimwear is independently tested to UPF50+ against three international standards: AS 4399:2020 (Australia), EN 13758-1:2007 (Europe), and AATCC TM183:2020 (USA). Unlike sunscreen, which requires reapplication every two hours, UPF50+ fabric provides consistent protection throughout wear and does not wash out or degrade with regular use.
2. Is synthetic swimwear safe for babies?
Yes. MIKOU swimwear is made from high-quality Italian fabrics that are certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Product Class 1, the highest classification in the OEKO-TEX® system, reserved specifically for products in direct contact with baby skin. This certification guarantees the fabric is free from over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals, and allergenic dyes. Unlike cotton, which absorbs water, becomes heavy when wet, and typically offers UPF15 at best when dry, MIKOU's fabric is breathable, quick-drying, and engineered specifically for waterwear.
3. Can babies wear UV swimsuits in a pram or car seat?
MIKOU swimwear is designed for active use in and around water, at the beach, pool, or under a garden sprinkler. We recommend avoiding prolonged wear in warm, non-water environments such as a pram or car seat, as the suits are not designed for thermal regulation. Their unlined design encourages airflow during water play, but this means they should not substitute for appropriate clothing outside water environments.
4. Do babies need a swim nappy under a UV swimsuit?
Yes. We recommend wearing a swim nappy underneath MIKOU's baby swimsuit styles. The fabric is ultra-thin and lightweight by design — breathable and fast-drying — but this means it can be slightly transparent when wet. A swim nappy underneath ensures full comfort and avoids accidents. MIKOU's baby swimsuits feature secure snap buttons with a reinforced spring mechanism, made in Italy, specifically designed to make nappy changes quick and easy even at the beach.
5. Do I need to put sunscreen under your UPF50+ sun suits ?
No. Our fabric is independently tested for UPF50+ sun protection and blocks ≥ 98 % of UVA & UVB. Just remember to sunscreen the uncovered parts: face, ears, neck, hands, feet and the edges of cuffs and to top-up exposed skin every 2 hours (or after swimming/towelling). If your child has a photosensitive condition, check with your paediatrician or dermatologist for personalised advice.
6. Does washing affect UPF50+ sun protection?
No. MIKOU's UPF50+ protection is inherent to the fabric structure, it does not wash out or degrade with regular use. To maintain the quality of your swimwear, rinse in cool fresh water after each use, avoid harsh detergents and bleach, gently squeeze out excess water, and lay flat to dry. The fast-dry fabric means your swimwear will be ready quickly for the next use.
7. Can babies overheat in UV swimwear?
MIKOU swimwear is designed for use in and around water, where the thin, breathable fabric helps keep children cool and comfortable. The unlined design encourages airflow. However, no swimwear replaces common-sense sun safety: avoid peak sun hours (10am–4pm), ensure your child stays hydrated, and monitor them closely in warm environments. If your child seems hot or uncomfortable, move them to shade immediately.
8. Is UPF50+ swimwear safe for newborns?
UPF50+ swimwear is safe for newborns and is recommended by dermatologists as a primary layer of sun protection for infants, whose skin is especially sensitive to UV radiation. MIKOU swimwear is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Product Class 1; the most stringent textile safety certification, designed specifically for items in direct contact with baby skin from birth. That said, the World Health Organisation advises keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight entirely. From 6 months onwards, UPF50+ swimwear provides essential protection. Always consult your paediatrician if you have specific concerns.
9. From what age can babies wear UV swimwear?
MIKOU baby swimwear starts from 6 months. Dermatologists and paediatricians generally advise keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight, as their skin is extremely sensitive and sunscreen is not recommended for this age group. From 6 months, UPF50+ swimwear provides a safe and effective layer of sun protection. MIKOU is sized from 6 months through to 36 months; our full size guide is available.
10. What size should I buy for my baby?
MIKOU baby swimwear is sized by age from 6 months to 36 months. Because babies grow at different rates, we recommend checking our detailed size guide for measurements rather than relying on age alone. When in doubt between two sizes, size up : it ensures comfortable movement and full coverage. Our complete size guide is available.
11. Is recycled fabric safe for baby skin?
Yes. MIKOU baby swimsuits are made from VITA by Carvico, a premium recycled polyester fabric produced in Italy from recycled plastic. Our rashguards use ECONYL® regenerated nylon, also Italian, made from recovered ocean fishing nets and industrial plastic waste. Both fabrics are certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Product Class 1 : the most stringent textile safety classification, reserved for products in direct contact with baby skin from birth. This certification confirms that every component is free from over 100 harmful substances including pesticides, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and allergenic dyes.
11. Where are your products made?
Our swimwear is proudly made in Portugal using high-quality Italian fabric. We believe in supporting sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices, ensuring your purchase is as good for the planet as it is for your child.
